Workshop with Christiana Vardakou: Bundle Dyeing with Plants
As part of this retreat, I will be leading an exclusive Bundle Dyeing Workshop, where we will use plants, flowers, and natural materials to create one-of-a-kind botanical prints on silk scarves.
🌿 What is Bundle Dyeing?
Bundle dyeing is a contemporary natural dyeing technique that transfers colour from plants directly onto fabric using steam. This process allows us to capture the intricate shapes, textures, and hues of flowers, leaves, and other botanicals, resulting in a beautifully organic and unpredictable print.
What We’ll Explore in the Workshop
🧺 Foraging Walk: Before we begin dyeing, we’ll explore the Andros landscape, collecting local plants and flowers to use in our prints.
🎨 Botanical Printing: Each participant will learn how to arrange plants on fabric, roll and bundle them, and use steam to develop the colours.
📝 Understanding Natural Dyeing:
• The history and traditions of plant dyeing
• How different plant materials create unique colours and textures
• The impact of fabric choice on dye results (silk, wool, cotton, linen)
🌎 Sustainability & Care:
• Why natural dyes are a gentle, eco-friendly alternative
• How to properly care for naturally dyed fabrics to make them last
At the end of the workshop, you’ll take home a hand-dyed silk scarf, imprinted with the beautiful shapes and colours of the plants you’ve used.
